☕ Barry's Coffee Break

Sometimes ten quiet minutes can make all the difference. Barry's Coffee Break is a place to stop for a while.

A face behind the book! 😊

I’m Barry, author of Finding Calm.

Life can get busy, and our minds can get busier still. I wrote this book to share thoughts and practical ideas for approaching everyday worries with a little more calm and perspective.

As we head into the weekend, remember: you don’t have to sort everything out today.

New — Revised Edition 2026

Awareness, Stress & Confidence — the revised edition is here

This book first appeared in 2008. For this revised edition I have gone back through it with eighteen more years of life experience behind me.

It looks at three connected parts of everyday life: understanding yourself, dealing with stress and worry, and growing in confidence — through stories, questions and simple weekly exercises.

There are no complicated theories here, and no pretence that one answer suits everyone. Read it at your own pace, try what feels useful and leave aside what doesn't.

Change doesn't have to happen overnight. Sometimes it begins with one small step — a bite at a time.

☕ Barry's Coffee Break

We often imagine progress as something dramatic—a breakthrough, a big decision or a completely different life.

But progress can be much quieter than that.

Getting through a difficult morning.

Answering the telephone.

Stepping outside.

Trying again after a setback.

Or simply carrying on when life feels difficult.

Don't dismiss those quieter victories. They count too.

Not every day needs a breakthrough. Sometimes, simply carrying on is progress — Barry's Coffee Break, MindYourHeadUK

☕ Barry's Coffee Break

There was a time when severe anxiety made my world feel very small.

Today, I enjoy the freedom of living my life again.

Recovery doesn't necessarily mean that anxious feelings never return. It means they no longer make all the decisions. Gradually, ordinary pleasures return, confidence grows and the future begins to feel exciting again.

If you are struggling today, please remember: where you are now is not necessarily where you will always be.

Confidence isn't the absence of fear. It's taking the next step anyway — Barry's Coffee Break
Let Small Things Be Enough — a mug, an old book and a jar of wildflowers on a table overlooking a golden valley at sunset

We can spend so much time searching for answers that we forget to give our minds a chance to rest.

Not every worry needs solving today. Sometimes the kindest thing we can do is pause, breathe, and allow the day to unfold in its own time.

A calmer mind often begins with one quiet moment.

A Personal Note from Me

Every post you see on MindYourHeadUK is posted by me, Barry, and every comment is read by me.

This is not a faceless page. It is a place where I share thoughts drawn from my own experiences and the lessons life has taught me.

If something I post helps you feel less alone, offers a different perspective or simply gives you a moment of calm, then MindYourHeadUK is doing what I hoped it would do.

Please feel welcome to share your thoughts. Sometimes knowing that somebody has listened can make a real difference.

And if life feels particularly difficult, please speak to someone you trust or seek appropriate professional support. You do not have to carry everything alone.

Finding Calm is here

A little bit of news from me today.

After many months of writing, rewriting, checking and the occasional cup of coffee, Finding Calm – Creating Peace in a Busy World is now available to buy.

It’s a book about worry, anxiety, kindness, contentment and some of the simple lessons life teaches us along the way.

I haven’t written it as an expert telling people how they should live their lives. I’ve written it simply as someone who has lived a little, worried a lot, learned a few things — and eventually found his own way towards a calmer life.

If it helps just one person find a little more peace in theirs, writing it will have been worthwhile.

Finding Calm is available from today.

Not Everything Needs Solving

Sometimes we spend so much time trying to fix tomorrow that we forget to enjoy today.

Not every thought needs an answer. Not every worry needs our attention. Sometimes the best thing we can do is leave a problem alone for a while, make a cup of coffee and let the day carry on.

Perhaps calm begins when we stop trying to solve everything at once.

Ten Quiet Minutes

Sometimes ten quiet minutes can make all the difference.

Barry's Coffee Break is simply a place to stop for a while.

No complicated theories.
No lists of things you should be doing.
No promises to change your life.

Just a cup of coffee and a few thoughts about the things most of us experience from time to time — worry, confidence, people, gratitude, contentment and the everyday pressures of life.

Some weeks I might share a story.

Sometimes an observation.

Perhaps something I've learned from one of the thousands of people I've met over the years.

And occasionally...
Just something that's been on my mind.

You don't have to agree with me.

You don't even have to drink coffee.

Just take a few minutes away from the noise.

Put the kettle on.

Find somewhere comfortable.

And welcome to Barry's Coffee Break.

That's enough thinking for one coffee.
